Scotland is known as a very open and inclusive country, welcoming diversity and supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Scotland since 2014. Religious and civil wedding ceremonies

Civil partnerships and same-sex marriages

Before same-sex marriage became legal in 2014, civil partnerships were introduced for same-sex couples in 2005. Civil partnerships are similar to marriages, but there are some legal differences. They are now available to all couples, whether same-sex or opposite-sex. Civil partnerships are seen as a less traditional alternative to marriage, which some couples prefer and may still opt for.

However, if you previously formed a civil partnership in Scotland, you can now change this to a marriage if you wish. It can be done by an administrative process. Or, if you like, you can have a marriage ceremony. This is an excellent excuse for a party! Especially if you had a low-key celebration the first time around. Scottish wedding celebrations

In Scotland, wedding celebrations usually include a wedding ceremony, followed by a meal and then an evening reception. They can be small, intimate occasions or large and vibrant celebrations. You can include any wedding traditions that you like, and ditch any that you don’t. It’s your day.
